I’m probably the most type-A girl you’ll ever meet. I track my reading like some people track sports statistics. I go full-on data analyst. I have spreadsheets, Notion boards, Goodreads lists, the works. And while reading isn’t a competition, it is for me.
Not in the sense that I’m competing with other people. The only person I compete against is myself. Every year I strive to read better. To broaden my horizons, to read more queer books, more BIPOC books. I want to be better, and I need data to back that up.
So, was 2024 a better reading year than 2023? Let’s review the footage.
my year in books
Compared to 2023, I did read less, but that was also intentional. One of my reading goals was to read less. This may seem counterproductive to having a good reading year, but I wanted to focus on quality in 2024.
Speaking of quality, I only gave 15 books 5-star ratings this year. That means there’s a 20% chance a book I pick up will be 5 stars. That’s incredibly low odds, and I was being generous with myself because at least 5 of my 5-star books were rereads and not new books.
According to Goodreads, my average rating for 2024 is 4 stars, which if you ask me is a flawed number.
Toward the end of the year, I stopped rating a lot of books on my Goodreads. As I transition from being a reader to being a writer, I kind of don’t want to share my ratings for books anymore. It might be a dramatic decision, but sometimes I feel so confined by this 5-star system. It doesn’t accurately reflect my feelings for the books, so I’m going to stop using it.
formats, sources, and other fun stats
It’s always interesting for me to see which formats I enjoy reading. It’s no surprise that audiobooks are my most-read format. If you combine audiobooks with ALC (advanced listening copies), audiobooks made up 42% of my reading this year. I did also try to read more of my physical owned TBR, so tallying up all of the physical copies would put them at 28.5%. Not bad, but since I got rid of most of my books before moving to a new country this will drastically change in 2025.
Unsurprisingly, I read more adult books than YA books this year. Though YA had a slight uptick as I got back into reading chonky fantasy books.
Most of my books come from LibroFM, either bought or through their influencer program. It’ll be fun to see how this stat changes as I enter my year of not buying books (more on that next week).
all of the books I read in 2024
This will just be a quick, rapid-fire list of all 77 books I read this year, broken down by months to make it easy to view. Ones in bold are 5-star reads, ones in italics are rereads.

Overall I feel pretty meh about this reading year. I discovered some new favourites and re-discovered my love for fantasy.
I’m going to be taking a different approach to reading next year, which I’ll talk more about in next week’s newsletter.
Let’s chat!

I do feel a bit dissatisfied by my reading year, even though upon review I did read quite a few amazing books. I think the disappointing reads, unfortunately stood out more. And I really wanted to read more books off of my physical TBR.
I had a really slow reading year. I think I only read about 25-30 books and only had like 4 or 5 5 star reads🤔
💕A rivalry of hearts is also on my tbr and seeing that you gave it such a high ranking I'll definitely have to read it this new year! The cover is so pretty as well!☺️
I think my favorite books were the Lovelight Farm series and the Mile High series I continued this year🎉
I hope you have a great start into the new year!🍀🤎
